U.S. Air Force boosts B-21 Raider production capacity by 25%

U.S. Air Force and Northrop Grumman Boost B-21 Raider Production

In a strategic move to enhance its long-range strike capabilities, the U.S. Air Force, in collaboration with Northrop Grumman, has agreed to increase the production capacity of the B-21 Raider stealth bomber by 25%. This initiative is aimed at expediting the delivery of this next-generation platform, according to a recent release by the Air Force on February 23.

This expansion leverages $4.5 billion from the fiscal year 2025 reconciliation legislation, famously dubbed the “One Big Beautiful Bill.”

The decision accelerates the acquisition timeline, boosting annual production capacity by 25% to meet delivery schedules while adhering to cost and performance metrics. The B-21 Raider, developed by Northrop Grumman, entered low-rate initial production following a contract awarded in January 2024.

Deliveries commenced as scheduled in 2025, with the first operational units expected at Ellsworth Air Force Base in South Dakota by 2027. Secretary of the Air Force Troy Meink emphasized the strategic importance of this development: “The B-21 is foundational to our long-range strike capability and to credible deterrence. Accelerating production capacity now ensures we deliver operational capability to combatant commanders faster — strengthening our ability to outpace, deter, and, if necessary, defeat emerging threats. This is disciplined execution at the speed the security environment demands.”

The initial production targets anticipated a gradual increase, aiming for a full rate of approximately seven aircraft annually. However, the exact total planned procurement remains classified, with the Air Force intending to replace its aging fleet of B-1B Lancer and B-2 Spirit bombers with at least 100 B-21s over the coming years.

Gen. Dale R. White, overseeing Critical Major Weapon Systems, noted the significance of this expansion: “This is what disciplined acquisition delivers. This decision reflects our confidence in the program’s performance and the stability of the industrial base. By increasing production capacity now, we are responsibly accelerating delivery of a critical, combat-effective capability to the warfighter.”

The B-21 Raider stands as the Air Force’s foremost priority for nuclear modernization and enhancing conventional long-range strike capabilities, offering a significant edge in complex combat environments. This production increase aligns with broader Defense Department efforts led by Secretary Pete Hegseth to rapidly acquire and deploy next-generation capabilities in response to evolving global threats.

While the precise future production rate and fleet size remain undisclosed, the commitment to a 25% capacity expansion underscores a significant step in advancing the U.S. military’s strategic capabilities.
