U.S. Army contracts FN America for advanced Precision Grenadier System

U.S. Army Advances Next-Gen Weapon Development Through New Contract

The U.S. Army is moving forward with the development of a cutting-edge weapon system through a new collaboration with FN America, LLC. The announcement, made ahead of the U.S. Army Association’s annual conference, details a $2 million Prototype Project Opportunity Notice contract aimed at enhancing the Precision Grenadier System prototype.

This new contract is set to drive improvements in the reliability of the weapon and its integration with existing Army systems. Mark Cherpes, the president and CEO of FN America, highlighted the transformative potential of the system, stating, “Once developed and implemented, this weapon system could radically change future battlefield strategies. It will offer new capabilities at the squad level and upgraded tactical options, giving the warfighter a more effective system.”

The FN Multipurpose Tactical Launcher (MTL-30) emerges as a significant highlight of this development. The shoulder-fired, semi-automatic weapon is capable of launching 30mm grenades on a flat trajectory with an effective range of 500 meters. This contrasts with current 40mm grenade launchers, which require higher trajectories. The MTL-30’s design allows for a broader range of applications in combat scenarios.

The Army’s earlier solicitation emphasized the importance of weapon versatility, from close combat to neutralizing drones. The Precision Grenadier System is anticipated to serve as a primary weapon system, providing close-quarters combat, counter-defilade, and counter-UAS capabilities. According to the Army’s solicitation, the system will support various combat scenarios while minimizing resupply needs.

Critical to countering enemy positions, the system’s rounds are being designed to penetrate both natural and artificial cover. The design of the Precision Grenadier System features a modular, Picatinny-style rail system for mounting optics and other attachments. Additionally, it includes Magpul-designed M-LOK system points for further accessory attachment.

With its ambidextrous configuration, the MTL-30 allows for ease of operation by both right- and left-handed users. It supports various muzzle suppressors and can be loaded with detachable box magazines holding three to five rounds. The weapon’s lower receiver, modeled after the M4, includes a 6-position telescoping buttstock and modular cheek risers for enhanced firing stability.

The MTL-30, measuring 34 inches and weighing over 10 pounds, draws from real-time feedback and evolving battlefield needs, particularly from regions like Ukraine. FN America, based in Columbia, South Carolina, is the U.S. arm of the Belgian arms manufacturer Fabrique Nationale.
