In a significant move towards bolstering its defense capabilities, Ukraine is on the verge of acquiring the advanced Swedish Gripen fighter jets. This pursuit marks a pivotal step in Ukraine’s ongoing efforts to modernize its air force with a formidable fourth-generation aircraft, capable of operating from remote and rugged airstrips.
On October 22, Ukrainian and Swedish officials declared the signing of a letter of intent, paving the way for the potential export of up to 150 fighter jets to Kyiv. This acquisition could significantly enhance Ukraine’s defense posture against diverse electronic warfare and missile threats.
Swedish Defense Minister Pål Jonson revealed that Ukraine has expressed interest in acquiring between 100 and 150 aircraft, focusing on the latest E variant. The Swedish government is currently exploring various long-term financing mechanisms to facilitate such a substantial order.
During a press briefing in Linköping, the headquarters of Swedish aerospace company Saab, Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson announced that the initial deliveries of the Gripen jets could commence in approximately three years. According to Kristersson, “We are talking about the latest generation, which was literally recently presented in Sweden, production is just beginning here. Therefore, we are talking about three years in practice.” He further noted that fulfilling the complete order of 150 units might span over a decade.
Recently, the Swedish Air Force F7 Wing became the first operational unit to deploy and operate the Gripen E, underscoring the aircraft’s cutting-edge electronic warfare capabilities as highlighted on Saab’s website.
For Ukraine, the integration of these jets could be particularly advantageous amid the ongoing conflict, offering enhanced flexibility for aerial operations from shorter and less developed airstrips. Moreover, the aircraft would enable the Ukrainian Air Force to conduct extended-range air-to-air and air-to-ground combat missions, carrying heavier payloads.
