Democratic Socialist McKinney Wins Michigan Congressional Primary

Michigan’s 13th Congressional District Primary Sees Democratic Socialist Victory

In a surprising turn of events, Democratic Socialist challenger Donavan McKinney emerged victorious in the Democratic primary for Michigan’s 13th Congressional District, defeating incumbent U.S. Congressman Shri Thanedar.

The 13th District, encompassing Wayne County and parts of Detroit and its suburbs, is traditionally a Democratic stronghold, setting the stage for a favorable general election outlook for McKinney. According to the Cook Political Report, the district is solidly Democratic.

McKinney, a Michigan House of Representatives member, secured 51.9% of the vote to Thanedar’s 48.1%, with all precincts reporting. The victory positions McKinney to face Republican nominee T.P. Nykoriak in the upcoming midterms.

Both McKinney and Thanedar campaigned on progressive platforms, opposing President Donald Trump and advocating for universal healthcare and other progressive priorities. However, McKinney distinguished himself by taking more left-leaning stances, such as calling for an end to military aid and arms to Israel and rejecting corporate influence in politics.

Notable progressives, including U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders, U.S. Rep. Rashida Tlaib, and U.S. Senate hopeful Abdul El-Sayed, threw their support behind McKinney, citing his commitment to grassroots activism and progressive ideals.

In his acceptance statement, McKinney expressed gratitude for the community’s trust in him and pledged to fight for a better future. He emphasized the importance of representing diverse interests and combating corporate influence in politics.

Thanedar, who had aligned with the Democratic Socialists of America in 2022, distanced himself from the group in 2023 and shifted his focus to strong support for Israel. Despite his progressive background, Thanedar faced a defeat in the primary against McKinney.

The Associated Press officially called the race in McKinney’s favor at 9:55 a.m., marking a significant win for the Democratic Socialist candidate in Michigan’s 13th Congressional District.
