In a surprising twist in Virginia’s 7th District congressional race, Republican candidate Doug Ollivant’s campaign has been circulating outdated maps, causing confusion among voters. Despite the candidate’s impressive background, the recurring issue highlights a significant campaign oversight.
Doug Ollivant, who is aiming to unseat Democratic incumbent Rep. Eugene Vindman, has been actively campaigning in the district that includes Fredericksburg, Bowling Green, and Culpeper. However, his campaign has faced scrutiny after sharing maps that inaccurately depict the district’s boundaries, extending them further south than the current 2021 redrawn lines.
Since June 2026, at least four videos featuring these incorrect maps have been shared on social media by Ollivant’s campaign. Notably, one of these videos has even been promoted on Facebook, indicating campaign funds were used to disseminate the erroneous information.
Ollivant, with a notable past as the director for Iraq at the U.S. National Security Council during the Bush administration in 2008, has positioned himself as a political outsider in most of his campaign materials, despite his governmental ties.
Facing a primary on August 4, Ollivant will compete against Pentecostal minister Philip Harding and pastor Ricky Smithers for the Republican nomination. The race in District 7 is anticipated to be one of the most competitive in the 2026 House elections.
