Michigan Attorney General Candidate Eli Savit Addresses Gun Violence Prevention Strategies
Michigan Attorney General hopeful Eli Savit shared his comprehensive plan to combat gun violence during a recent roundtable discussion in Detroit. As the current Washtenaw County prosecutor, Savit emphasized the importance of public awareness and community engagement in enforcing existing laws and implementing new measures.
Savit highlighted the significance of Michigan’s safe gun storage and red flag laws, which allow for the temporary removal of firearms from individuals deemed dangerous. Acknowledging the progress made through these laws, he stressed the need for ongoing education and outreach efforts to ensure their effectiveness statewide.
According to state data, Michigan issued over 400 extreme risk protection orders last year, reflecting the impact of these legislative measures. In addition to legislative reforms, participants in the discussion commended community violence interruption programs for their positive influence on reducing gun violence.
Advocates at the roundtable also called for stricter regulations on gun modifiers and “ghost guns,” which pose challenges due to their lack of serial numbers and traceability. Despite previous legislative efforts to address these issues, Savit expressed his commitment to revisiting the issue if elected as Attorney General.
Savit emphasized the need for legislation targeting ghost guns and modifications that enhance the lethality of firearms. He underscored the role of common-sense laws in preventing crime and ensuring public safety in Michigan.
As the Democratic candidate for Michigan Attorney General, Savit faces Republican opponent Doug Lloyd in the upcoming November election. Despite criticisms labeling him as soft on crime, Savit defended his record by highlighting his prosecution of numerous gun-related offenses during his tenure.
