Amidst the political rivalry in Maine, a recent Republican advertisement has come under scrutiny for presenting misleading assertions about the family of Troy Jackson, a candidate for the U.S. Senate. This ad aims to portray Jackson as a political figure who compromised an environmental bill for personal gain.
Controversial Claims in the Ad
The advertisement, created by the Senate Leadership Fund PAC, alleges that Jackson played a pivotal role in halting an anti-pollution bill, supposedly benefiting his son, Chace, a lobbyist. However, these claims are significantly exaggerated regarding both Jackson’s involvement and his son’s influence over the legislation.
“One polluter wanted to stop a bill cracking down on emissions,” the ad states. “They paid Jackson’s son and, with Jackson in charge, the bill went up in smoke.” The ad refers to LD 1707, a 2019 bill aimed at requiring independent testing for environmental compliance, which Jackson’s son’s firm lobbied against.
Examining the Facts
Though Chace Jackson was affiliated with the lobbying firm registered against LD 1707, he was merely an associate, not the key player. Furthermore, the bipartisan Environment and Natural Resources Committee unanimously voted against the bill, and Troy Jackson held no position on this committee nor did he influence its decision. Under Maine’s legislative rules, a bill that a committee unanimously opposes must gain a two-thirds majority in both chambers to proceed, something LD 1707 lacked.
The ad also misleadingly suggests that Chace Jackson personally gained almost $200,000 from special interests. This amount actually pertains to the lobbying firm’s earnings, not Chace’s individual income. As noted in a Washington Beacon report, the firm, not Chace individually, received $182,500 from nine clients in 2024.
Political Implications
A Bangor Daily News analysis in 2024 found no evidence that Troy Jackson altered his political stances due to his son’s lobbying activities. Currently, Jackson is challenging Republican Senator Susan Collins, with a recent Beacon Research poll showing him slightly ahead by two points.
