Fundraising Takes Priority for Iowa Rep. Ashley Hinson Over Crucial House Votes
While the House Appropriations Committee was making significant decisions, Iowa Rep. Ashley Hinson was notably absent, choosing instead to focus on her U.S. Senate campaign fundraising efforts.
On June 24, the committee held votes on 11 amendments related to the 2027 Defense Appropriations bill, which is crucial for determining Pentagon and defense program funding for the upcoming fiscal year. Hinson, who is a committee member, missed seven of these important votes.
The absence coincided with a fundraising lunch event hosted by West Virginia Sen. Shelly Moore Capito, as revealed by an email from Grand Valley Consulting, a firm advising Republican candidates. Attendees of the event were charged between $1,000 to $2,500 for tickets.
Progressive media outlet MidasTouch shared a video showing Hinson entering the fundraising event during the ongoing voting session.
The missed votes addressed several critical national security issues, such as the allocation of Defense Department funds, the reduction of American troops in Europe, and modifications to military officer promotion criteria.
Hinson has faced criticism for seemingly placing her Senate campaign above her congressional responsibilities. Despite her campaign activities, she has not conducted a single town hall meeting with her constituents this year.
As she aims to replace the retiring Republican Sen. Joni Ernst, Hinson will compete against Democratic state Rep. Josh Turek in the upcoming general election.
Recent polling by the New York Times and Siena University indicated Hinson holding a slim 2-point lead over Turek.
