Empowering Young Voters: An Artist’s Perspective
As the November elections approach, Michigan Public is delving into the minds of the state’s youngest voters to understand the driving forces behind their decision to participate in the democratic process. One such individual is Navahni Pritchett, a visual artist and activist from Kalamazoo, whose passion for creating change is fueled by the pursuit of racial justice and opportunities for youth.
Advocating for Youth Opportunities
For Pritchett, the crucial issue at hand is the creation of opportunities for young people to flourish. Coming from Kalamazoo, where violence has cast a shadow over the future of many youths, he emphasizes the need for robust youth programs to provide a safer and more promising environment. “I feel like they need to have a better future,” Pritchett asserts, pointing to the alarming rate of violence affecting the younger population.
Championing Racial Justice and Representation
Reflecting on his voting experience in the 2024 election, Pritchett recalls being the sole young Black man at the polling place, a stark reminder of the ongoing struggle for racial equality. Drawing from his family’s history and the legacy of Black voter suppression, Pritchett emphasizes the importance of using one’s voice to combat systemic injustices. “With us having a chance to be outside the box, it actually matters to us because it makes us feel whole as a people,” he explains, underscoring the significance of representation and active participation in the electoral process.
As Navahni Pritchett continues to advocate for change through his art and activism, his message resonates with a generation of young voters striving to make their voices heard and drive meaningful progress in their communities and beyond.
