Michigan Governor Whitmer Endorses Secretary of State Benson for Governor
Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer and Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson made a joint appearance to announce Whitmer’s formal endorsement of Benson after her Democratic nomination victory. The event aimed to unite Democrats and move past the divisions often seen in primary campaigns.
Benson expressed confidence that Democrats would come together to support common goals such as reducing costs, boosting the economy, raising wages, protecting rights, and fighting corruption. She emphasized the importance of unity heading into the November elections.
Whitmer highlighted the increased voter turnout in the Democratic primary compared to the Republican side, indicating a high level of enthusiasm among Democratic voters. She underscored the critical issues at stake, including reproductive rights, tariffs, workers’ rights, and progressive education policies.
Looking ahead to the general election, Benson will face Republican Congressman John James. Despite the challenge, Benson aims to succeed a retiring governor from the same party in a state where President Donald Trump’s popularity is waning.
