Michigan Governor Signs Legislation to Promote Safe Gun Storage
Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer recently signed a package of bills aimed at promoting safe gun storage practices among parents in the state. The legislation, known as the “Safe Homes, Safe Schools” bill package, was sponsored by State Representatives Sharon MacDonell and Julie Brixie.
The new laws require the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services to develop informational materials outlining the state’s secure gun storage requirements. Schools will then distribute these materials to parents annually. The storage laws, which became effective last year, mandate that firearms be securely stored in locked containers or safes, unloaded, and equipped with gun locks in all locations where children are present, including homes and vehicles.
Parents will receive suggestions on where to obtain free or low-cost gun locks and safes to comply with the law. Furthermore, the legislation establishes a permanent School Safety and Mental Health Commission and mandates public schools to form behavior threat assessment and management teams.
Ryan Bates, the executive director of End Gun Violence Michigan, emphasized the importance of adhering to and enforcing Michigan’s gun laws to prevent gun-related incidents. Bates highlighted that failure to securely store firearms could lead to legal repercussions, including felony charges.
According to a report, firearms were identified as the leading cause of death for children and teenagers in Michigan in 2022. The new laws aim to address this concerning trend and enhance safety measures surrounding gun ownership in the state.
