Michigan House Oversight Committee Authorizes Subpoena Against Secretary of State

The Republican-led Michigan House Oversight Committee has approved a subpoena targeting Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson for her refusal to share election materials with lawmakers. This move comes after weeks of escalating tensions between House Republicans and the Democratic Secretary of State, who has accused GOP leaders of undermining trust in Michigan’s election security.

Representative Jay DeBoyer, the Chair of the House Oversight Committee, defended the subpoena, citing concerns about transparency and the need for cooperation from the Secretary of State’s office. On the other side, Deputy Secretary of State Aghogho Edevbie has stood firm on the decision not to share the requested materials, emphasizing the importance of maintaining election integrity.

Former Republican Attorney General Mike Cox also made an appearance on It’s Just Politics to discuss his gubernatorial aspirations for Michigan in 2026, adding another layer to the state’s political landscape.

As the debate continues, the subpoena authorization underscores the ongoing tensions between Michigan’s election officials and lawmakers, highlighting the complexities of ensuring transparency and trust in the electoral process.
