Michigan Labor Organization Criticizes GOP Senate Candidate for Trump Support
A major Michigan labor organization, AFL-CIO, has voiced criticism against Republican U.S. Senate candidate Mike Rogers for his support of President Donald Trump’s policies. Rogers, a former congressman, is currently running unopposed in the upcoming August GOP primary.
AFL-CIO Michigan president Ron Bieber expressed concerns about Rogers’ alignment with Trump’s agenda, stating that it is negatively impacting various aspects of Michiganders’ lives, including healthcare and grocery prices.
Bieber was quoted saying, “Working people deserve a fighter in the U.S. Senate. Instead, Mike Rogers is lying to Michigan voters all while he supports cutting the very programs they rely on.”
In response to these criticisms, Rogers’ campaign defended his positions by pointing out that Democrats had failed to address affordability concerns during the Biden administration when inflation rose significantly. Alyssa Brouillet, a spokeswoman for Rogers, emphasized that the candidate aims to address issues such as raising wages, cutting taxes, and making life more affordable through his proposed plans.
Despite these differing views, it was announced that Mike Rogers will not be receiving an endorsement from the AFL-CIO, which represents around one million active and retired members in Michigan. The organization is set to release its endorsement list on Thursday.
Democratic U.S. Senate Primary in Michigan Sees Tight Competition
Amidst the Republican primary developments, the Democratic U.S. Senate primary in Michigan is witnessing a closely contested race. Recent polls indicate a tight competition between U.S. Representative Haley Stevens, State Senator Mallory McMorrow, and former public health official Dr. Abdul El-Sayed.
The Senate race is characterized as a battle between the Democratic Party’s establishment and its progressive wings, reflecting the diverse views within the party. As absentee ballots have already begun circulating, the candidates are actively engaging with voters to secure their support ahead of the August 4 primary.
