Michigan Sees Surge in Young Voters for 2024 Election
In the 2024 election, Michigan witnessed a remarkable increase in the participation of young voters, marking a significant shift in the state’s political landscape. The surge in youth engagement has sparked curiosity about their priorities and expectations from candidates seeking their support. Our team of summer interns embarked on a mission to uncover these insights through the What the Vote?! project, bringing forth the stories of young voters like 21-year-old Aubrey Greenfield.
Aubrey Greenfield’s Advocacy for Gun Violence Prevention
21-year-old Aubrey Greenfield, a survivor of the tragic Oxford High School shooting in November 2021, has emerged as a vocal advocate for gun violence prevention. Reflecting on her experience, Greenfield expressed her disappointment in the slow progress on legislative measures to address gun violence, particularly in relation to issues like ghost guns. Despite her allegiance to the Democratic party, she acknowledged the collective shortfall in addressing this critical issue.
Reproductive Health Care and Democratic Support
While Greenfield’s advocacy for gun violence prevention fuels her civic engagement, she also emphasized the importance of access to reproductive health care as a driving factor in her political participation. Greenfield lauded the Democratic party for its unwavering commitment to protecting women’s reproductive rights in Michigan, citing the constitutional amendment as a significant milestone in safeguarding these liberties.
Perseverance and Hope for the Future
Despite facing moments of disillusionment, Greenfield remains steadfast in her pursuit of meaningful change. She highlighted the necessity of continuous advocacy and engagement to propel progress on critical issues. As she looks ahead to future elections, Greenfield recognizes the enduring commitment required to effect positive change and empower others through informed decision-making.
