Georgia Rep. Mike Collins Faces Scrutiny Over Cryptocurrency Trades Amid Congressional Stock Trading Ban Endorsement

Georgia Representative Mike Collins has found himself in the spotlight after endorsing a ban on congressional stock trading, despite his active involvement in buying and selling cryptocurrency.

During an April meet-and-greet, Collins was questioned by a voter about his crypto activities. In response, he asserted that cryptocurrencies were beyond the reach of insider trading malpractices. “I don’t know how you would manipulate crypto,” Collins explained. “It’d be like trying to manipulate the dollar, the peso or something. But the stock trading, I don’t know how to do it … All I want to know is when people stop doing it. They’re getting insider information.”

Collins’ statement overlooks the potential for exploiting inside information in the cryptocurrency market. While cryptocurrencies operate on digital exchanges and not on traditional stock markets, individuals can still engage in profitable transactions based on secret knowledge. Unlike securities, such cases are typically prosecuted as wire or commodities fraud instead of insider trading.

In a notable 2021 case, the House Ethics Committee fined North Carolina Rep. Madison Cawthorne $14,000 for promoting a cryptocurrency in which he had a significant financial interest.

Collins has endorsed several proposed bans on congressional stock trading, and these measures would also extend to cryptocurrencies.

Recently, Collins won the Republican nomination for the U.S. Senate seat in Georgia. His primary rival, former football coach Derek Dooley, frequently criticized Collins for his cryptocurrency investments. “Collins treats Congress like his own crypto casino,” Dooley’s campaign wrote on X. “Georgians deserve leaders focused on service, not self-enrichment.”

As the general election approaches, this criticism is expected to persist. Incumbent Democratic Senator Jon Ossoff has emphasized combating political corruption and self-enrichment in his reelection campaign.

Simultaneously, President Donald Trump has faced backlash over a $1.4 billion windfall from his family’s cryptocurrency venture. Trump has publicly backed Collins’ campaign.

A recent Fox News poll indicated that Ossoff is leading Collins by 13 points among likely voters.
