NRSC Campaigns Stir Controversy with Medicaid Claims
The National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) has launched a series of advertisements in several states, stirring controversy by making dubious claims about Medicaid and undocumented immigrants.
The advertisements criticize Democratic Senate candidates in Ohio, Alaska, Iowa, Georgia, New Hampshire, North Carolina, and Michigan for their lack of support for the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBB). The NRSC asserts that this legislation prevents undocumented immigrants from receiving Medicaid benefits.
However, this assertion does not hold up to scrutiny. Under existing federal law, undocumented immigrants are already prohibited from accessing Medicaid, Medicare, CHIP, and Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) coverage. Cases where undocumented individuals have mistakenly received these benefits are exceedingly rare.
Despite being debunked by health policy experts, such as the Kaiser Family Foundation and Georgetown University’s McCourt School of Public Policy, the claim about the OBBB has been a recurring theme among Republicans since the bill’s introduction.
Notably, the OBBB does introduce significant changes to Medicaid, slashing approximately $1 trillion from the program over the next ten years, potentially leaving up to 12 million Americans without coverage. The majority of these cuts are intended to fund tax breaks that primarily benefit wealthier individuals.
Several politicians have shown support for OBBB, including Sens. Jon Husted (OH) and Dan Sullivan (AK), and Reps. Ashley Hinson (IA) and Mike Collins (GA), both of whom are pursuing Senate seats. Additionally, former New Hampshire Sen. John Sununu and former Michigan Rep. Mike Rogers have publicly endorsed the bill.
In North Carolina, Republican Senate candidate Michael Whatley expressed his support, stating he would have voted for OBBB “in a heartbeat” (source).
Despite these endorsements, a Kaiser Family Foundation tracking poll indicates that OBBB is unpopular among voters, with 64% viewing the law unfavorably, including 71% of independents.
Furthermore, President Donald Trump has suggested further tax reductions and additional cuts to government programs could be on the horizon, should Republicans maintain control of Congress following the 2026 elections.
