In the political landscape of Ohio, Rep. Mike Turner has become synonymous with support for U.S. military interventions, including his backing of the ongoing conflict in Iran.
Elected to Congress in 2002, Turner represents Ohio’s 10th District and is currently vying for his 13th term. His voting record between March and September 2026 reveals six instances of opposition to ending the Iran War, a conflict that has significantly impacted gas prices, pushing them to over $4 a gallon in many areas.
This military engagement in Iran stands in stark contrast to President Donald Trump’s campaign promise to avoid new wars, a pledge documented by The Guardian. Turner’s justification for the war hinges on preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons, a claim that has been met with skepticism by experts, including Joe Kent, a former Director of the National Counterterrorism Center, as reported by PBS.
Public opinion appears to diverge sharply from Turner’s stance. According to a recent Pew Research Center survey, a majority of 65% of Americans disapprove of the way the Iran conflict is being handled.
Turner’s support for military interventions is not new. He backed the Iraq War, which lasted from 2003 to 2011 and resulted in the deaths of over 4,500 U.S. servicemembers. In a 2006 interview with KPBS, Turner criticized the political opposition to the Iraq War, stating, “I regret that this issue, of Iraq, continues to be made a political issue. Something as simple as the war on terror, where we should have full and unanimous support from everyone, turns into a litany of political complaints and assaults on the administration.”
Turner similarly labeled the 2018 airstrikes on Syria as a “necessary action,” a sentiment expressed in a press release from his office.
Financially, Turner’s political campaigns have benefited significantly from defense industry contributions. According to data from OpenSecrets, he has received more than $2 million from defense-related sources, making him one of the top recipients of such funds as of 2024.
In the upcoming election, Turner faces opposition from Democrat Kristina Knickerbocker, an Air Force veteran. Knickerbocker has promised to vote for ending the Iran war if elected, asserting on social media, “As a veteran, I know the true cost of war. I would never vote to send our troops into harm’s way without a plan, a purpose, and the full authorization of Congress.”
