Trump Names New Acting Director Amid Plans to Restructure Federal Agency
In a move that could significantly impact America’s cultural heritage sector, President Donald Trump has appointed a new acting director for the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS). This decision comes as part of a broader strategy to streamline federal operations, which includes a recent executive order aimed at dismantling certain independent agencies.
The executive order aims to reduce what President Trump describes as “unnecessary” elements of the federal bureaucracy. Since assuming office, Trump has already curtailed several agencies such as the Consumer Finance Protection Bureau and the U.S. Agency for International Development. The IMLS, established in 1996, plays a crucial role in funding museums and libraries across the nation, distributing over $200 million annually in grants.
The Role of IMLS
The IMLS was created by a Republican-led Congress to “advance, support, and empower America’s museums, libraries, and related organizations through grantmaking, research, and policy development.” It emerged from a merger of earlier government entities, including the National Commission on Libraries and Information Science. Recent grants from the institute include $240,000 to the Chicago History Museum and nearly $25,000 to the Lorain Historical Society in Ohio. Despite its significant contributions, the agency’s future is now uncertain.
New Leadership at the Helm
Keith Sonderling has been appointed as the new acting director of IMLS. Previously a commissioner on the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, Sonderling has expressed his commitment to “enhance efficiency and foster innovation” within the organization. “We will revitalize IMLS and restore focus on patriotism,” he stated, emphasizing a dedication to American values.
IMLS Under Threat
While Trump has previously targeted IMLS for closure, Congress has maintained its funding. The American Library Association criticized the executive order, arguing it jeopardizes vital library services. The future of current grants remains unclear, but if past measures are any indication, IMLS might face closure similar to other small agencies.
Recent actions include the takeover of the U.S. Institute of Peace by the Department of Government Efficiency, led by Elon Musk. The DOJ has moved quickly to implement layoffs and terminate grants, following Trump’s directive to reduce government size. Legal challenges from former agency leaders have so far been unsuccessful in halting these changes.
