Putin’s Annual Press Conference Addresses Economy, Ukraine, and Trump

In what has become an annual tradition, Russian President Vladimir Putin engaged in a lengthy press conference, addressing a multitude of issues impacting Russia and the global landscape. This year’s session touched on economic challenges, military endeavors, and international relations, as Putin aimed to portray Russia as resilient and robust.

Economic Acknowledgement

Putin opened the session by discussing the economic state of Russia, conceding challenges such as inflation and high interest rates. The country’s key interest rate is currently at 21%, with inflation at 8.9%. He warned that inflation might reach 9.5% in 2025, describing the rise in food prices as “unpleasant and bad.” Notably, soaring prices of essentials like eggs previously prompted an apology from Putin.

Deflecting Blame

While discussing economic issues, Putin attributed some responsibility to the central bank and government, suggesting they could have better managed the economy’s overheating. He dismissed the notion that Western sanctions significantly impact Russia’s economy, stating, “They are not a key factor.”

Territorial Tensions

The ongoing conflict in Ukraine was another focal point, with Putin expressing confidence in territorial gains. However, he confronted the reality of Ukrainian forces occupying Russian territory in the Kursk region, marking a significant setback for the Kremlin. When asked about recapturing Kursk, Putin avoided providing a timeline, emphasizing the risk to soldiers’ lives.

Military Advancements

Putin highlighted Russia’s military capabilities, boasting about a new ballistic missile, the Oreshnik, which he claimed travels at Mach 10. He argued that Western air defenses couldn’t intercept it. Analysts, however, viewed its deployment more as political messaging than a substantial military advantage.

Syria’s Situation

Addressing Syria’s government collapse, Putin defended Russia’s support for the former Syrian president Bashar Assad. Despite being caught off guard by the swift developments, Putin argued that Russian interventions prevented Syria from becoming a “terroristic enclave.”

Potential Trump Meeting

On the international front, Putin expressed openness to meeting with President-elect Donald Trump, noting he had not yet been contacted by Trump’s team. Trump has indicated plans to mediate peace between Russia and Ukraine, though specific concessions remain unclear.

Strengthening Ties with China

Putin also underscored the strong relationship with China, describing it as better than ever. He assured that Russia would do nothing to undermine China’s confidence, calling Xi Jinping a friend. Despite the warm relations, analysts note underlying tensions, particularly regarding Russia’s position as a junior partner to China.
