Senate Prepares for HUD Nominee Scott Turner’s Confirmation Hearing
As the Senate gears up for a key confirmation hearing, all eyes are on Eric Scott Turner, the first Black nominee by President-elect Donald Trump for a cabinet position. Turner’s appointment as Secretary of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) is about to undergo intense scrutiny, with a confirmation hearing set for Thursday.
Eric Scott Turner, who previously served as the Executive Director of the White House Opportunity and Revitalization Council during Trump’s first term, faces questions about his qualifications for the HUD role.
Turner’s background includes a stint as a former NFL player and a Texas State Representative, but some critics argue his policy positions do not align with solving homelessness. An online petition opposing his nomination claims Turner has “a history of policy positions that betray the known truth that housing is the solution to homelessness.”
Notably, Democratic Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren has publicly announced her intention to question Turner thoroughly. She revealed on X, formerly Twitter, her plans to pose 75 questions to the nominee to scrutinize his record and views.
A ProPublica report highlighted Turner’s previous legislative actions, pointing out that he voted against tenant protections in Texas and has criticized government assistance as “one of the most destructive things for the family.”
In Turner’s prepared testimony for the Senate Committee on Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs, he describes the growing homelessness issue as “a national embarrassment and something that cannot continue.”
If confirmed, Turner would replace Adrianne Todman, who has been serving as Acting HUD Secretary following Marcia Fudge’s unexpected resignation in March. The HUD agency has a history of Black leadership, including Ben Carson, who served under Trump in his previous administration.
The confirmation hearing is set to commence at 10 a.m. ET, and those interested can watch a livestream through the Senate Committee on Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs. Click here to access the livestream.
