Shooting at Fort Eisenhower: 1 Dead, Suspect in Custody

Shooting Incident at Fort Eisenhower Results in Fatality and Suspect Arrest

A tragic event unfolded at Fort Eisenhower, Georgia, on Saturday morning when a shooting occurred, resulting in one fatality and the apprehension of a suspect. The incident took place within on-post housing, casting a shadow over the military community just outside Augusta.

According to a statement from the base, the situation was initially classified as an “active shooter” event. The identity of the victim has not yet been disclosed. Fort Eisenhower, known for its significant role as home to the U.S. Army Signal Corps and Cyber Center of Excellence, took immediate action by issuing a social media alert at approximately 8:50 a.m. urging those on the premises to “execute lockdown procedures” and to take necessary precautions if in danger.

Fort Eisenhower lifted the lockdown with an “all clear” signal about an hour later, at 9:45 a.m., allowing personnel to return to routine activities. Officials assured that “the dangerous event has passed,” emphasizing the restored safety on the base.

Meanwhile, local authorities broadcasted an alert to be vigilant for a white Toyota Camry with Tennessee plates, believed to be linked to the shooting. The vehicle was reportedly last observed heading towards South Carolina on I-20, near mile marker 145, as per a report by CBS affiliate WRDW.

Following the capture of a suspect, Fort Eisenhower confirmed the arrest but withheld further specifics. The Department of the Army Criminal Investigation Division, in concert with state and federal agencies, is conducting an in-depth investigation. Officials have indicated that the incident seems “to be isolated” and poses no additional threat to the community.

In a statement, officials expressed their commitment to “providing support to the victim’s family and assistance to anyone impacted by this tragedy.” They also reiterated that the safety and well-being of their residents, including soldiers and families, remains their utmost priority.

Out of respect for the victim’s family, the base has decided to withhold the victim’s identity until relatives are informed and given time to grieve. Further information was not disclosed as of Saturday.

Fort Eisenhower, formerly known as Fort Gordon, was established in 1917 and is one of the largest U.S. Army installations globally, hosting over 16,000 military personnel and 13,500 civilians. For more information, visit Fort Eisenhower’s official website.
