US Marine Among Four Killed in Philippines Plane Crash

Tragic Plane Crash in the Philippines Claims Lives of U.S. Marine and Contractors

A plane contracted by the U.S. military tragically crashed in a rice field in the southern Philippines, resulting in the death of a U.S. Marine and three defense contractors. The incident, which occurred last Thursday, is currently under investigation as officials work to determine the cause.

The U.S. Marine identified in the crash is Sgt. Jacob M. Durham, who was based at Camp Pendleton, California. Sgt. Durham was on a routine mission to provide intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance support to Philippine allies. This mission was part of the ongoing collaboration between U.S. forces and Filipino military personnel, who have been working together for decades to combat Muslim militants in the region.

The Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines confirmed the crash site in Maguindanao del Sur province, where the bodies were recovered by local officials. Ameer Jehad Tim Ambolodto, a safety officer for the province, confirmed the retrieval of the victims’ bodies from the wreckage in Ampatuan town.

Eyewitnesses reported seeing smoke and hearing an explosion before the plane descended less than a kilometer from a group of farmhouses, according to Windy Beaty, a provincial disaster-mitigation officer.

Sgt. Durham was a trained electronic intelligence/electromagnetic warfare analyst with the 1st Radio Battalion, I Marine Expeditionary Force Information Group. He joined the Marines in January 2021 and had recently been promoted to his current rank. His commendations include the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal, and National Defense Service Medal, among others.

Lt. Col. Mabel B. Annunziata, commanding officer of the 1st Radio Battalion, praised Sgt. Durham’s exemplary service, stating, “Sgt. Durham embodied the highest traditions of the Marine Corps — exemplifying composure, intelligence, and selfless leadership.” She added that he was “deeply respected and loved by his fellow Marines.”

As investigations proceed, the military and local authorities continue to seek answers regarding the cause of this tragic accident.
