U.S. Labor Secretary Engages with Phoenix Students and Business Leaders
On Wednesday, Acting U.S. Labor Secretary Keith Sonderling visited the West-MEC Southeast Campus in Phoenix, a hub for career and technical education, to observe its role in shaping the future workforce. During his visit, Sonderling toured programs in artificial intelligence and advanced manufacturing, and engaged with students and faculty.
Following the campus tour, Sonderling participated in a private roundtable discussion with local business leaders who are instrumental in guiding West-MEC’s curriculum to meet industry needs. He expressed admiration for the collaborative efforts to ensure students gain practical skills without accruing debt, stating, “That’s what really we are pushing in this administration. No longer do we want students to go to school and just graduate with a lot of debt and not have the skills they need for that job.”
Scott Spurgeon, Superintendent of West-MEC, highlighted the challenges faced by the district, particularly the lack of access to Department of Labor funding that traditional universities receive. He emphasized the necessity of federal support for innovative education systems, saying, “And when you’re looking at a system that’s innovative and a system that’s being creative and thinking outside the box, we have to sit in a space where we have the opportunity for the president and his team to be able to invest.”
West-MEC’s educational model aligns with the current administration’s workforce development plan, which aims to synchronize educational programs with the evolving demands of the economy.
