Antonelli’s Commanding Performance
Friday’s practice sessions in Belgium saw Antonelli bounce back strongly, setting the fastest lap of the day despite initial setbacks. His impressive performance placed him ahead of McLaren’s Lando Norris, who faces a grid penalty, and Red Bull’s Max Verstappen, who was the only other driver within half a second of his time.
While Hamilton secured the fourth-fastest time for Ferrari, Antonelli’s teammate George Russell struggled, finishing eighth. The practice was notably disrupted by a crash involving Pierre Gasly.
The first practice session was led by Verstappen, followed closely by Hamilton and Leclerc, as Ferrari looked to build on their recent success at the British Grand Prix. Antonelli initially placed sixth, with Russell also in eighth.
Challenges for Russell
While Antonelli navigates his hurdles with clarity, Russell faces more complex challenges. His second-place finish at the British GP was attributed more to luck than performance, benefiting from Antonelli’s technical issues and strategic errors by other drivers.
Russell’s reduced lead over Antonelli, now standing at 25 points, leaves him feeling “less satisfied.” The Belgian circuit, similar to Silverstone, presents both a challenge for Russell and an opportunity for Ferrari to exploit.
Leclerc’s surprising win in Britain has prompted Ferrari to analyze their performance closely, hoping to replicate that success. Meanwhile, Mercedes remains the dominant force, with Hamilton expressing that they “should be a lot further ahead” in the standings.
Norris’ Setback
Defending champion Norris faces a significant setback with a 10-place grid penalty due to McLaren replacing a problematic electrical component. His teammate, Piastri, remains confident in McLaren despite rumors of Verstappen’s interest elsewhere.
Verstappen, while uncertain about his future, praised Red Bull team boss Laurent Mekies for their past successes, including a memorable win in Belgium. However, recent technical issues with Red Bull’s car might impact Verstappen’s performance this weekend.
