In a significant legal battle in Lausanne, Switzerland, Aston Villa is challenging FIFA at the Court of Arbitration for Sport to secure playing rights for a promising young talent. The dispute centers around the 17-year-old forward, Brian Madjo, whose registration has been blocked, creating a buzz in the soccer community.
Earlier this year, Aston Villa invested heavily in Madjo, acquiring him for 12 million euros ($13.6 million) from the French club Metz. Despite this, Madjo has yet to make his debut due to FIFA’s regulations that restrict international transfers for players under 18. The young forward, originally from north London, will reach the eligible age in January.
The appeal hearing proceeded as planned, but the Court of Arbitration for Sport has not indicated when a decision will be reached. Aston Villa faces pressing deadlines, as they aim to include Madjo in their squad for the upcoming Champions League. UEFA’s registration cutoff is September 2, closely following the Premier League’s deadline after the transfer window closes on September 1.
After playing his last competitive match in December with Metz in Ligue 1, Madjo participated in three friendlies with Luxembourg’s senior team in 2025. Subsequently, he switched allegiances to play for England’s under-17 team.
FIFA does offer exceptions for certain transfers involving minors, particularly within the European Union. However, the UK’s exit from the EU complicates this scenario.
