Paulo, a leading daily, stated, “As long as the justice remains on the bench, dishonor and discredit will continue to pile up on the court. The most dignified and swift course would be for the justice to resign.” The publication further suggested impeachment by the Senate if de Moraes does not step down voluntarily.
Vorcaro’s downfall has ensnared several political figures, including Sen. Flávio Bolsonaro, an opposition candidate for the upcoming elections. Bolsonaro admitted to receiving $12 million from Vorcaro for a film about his father, former President Jair Bolsonaro. In a campaign event, he accused de Moraes of criminal conduct, stating, “It is not acceptable, with all that has been revealed, that he continues to be a Supreme Court justice.”
The controversy extends beyond mere allegations. Documents reviewed by Mendonca showed de Moraes had scrutinized a substantial contract between Vorcaro and de Moraes’ wife, Viviane Barci de Moraes, valued at around 130 million Brazilian reais. While de Moraes’ legal team claims he did so to avert conflicts of interest, de Moraes has refrained from commenting publicly on the situation.
Political and legal analysts continue to debate the implications of this scandal. Carlos Fávaro, a former agriculture minister, commented on social media that de Moraes must “clarify what happened or resign.” Meanwhile, Brazil’s Supreme Court is expected to decide whether formal investigations into de Moraes will proceed. Chief Justice Luiz Edson Fachin emphasized the importance of maintaining the court’s integrity, stating, “In moments of particular gravity, it is everyone’s duty to preserve the integrity of the Supreme Court, the authority of its decisions, respect for its rules and, above all, society’s trust in the institution.”
