As Florida’s gubernatorial race intensifies, Republican candidate Byron Donalds appears to be strategically distancing himself from former President Donald Trump. Observers have noted significant changes on Donalds’ campaign website, including the removal of high-profile Trump endorsements.
Previous prominent endorsements from Trump, highlighted with phrases like “TRUMP-ENDORSED Proven Conservative Fighter,” have been taken down. The website’s homepage, which once urged visitors to “Chip In to Support Trump-Endorsed Byron Donalds,” no longer displays these calls to action. Additionally, references to a section inspired by Trump’s 2025 endorsement have been removed.
According to the Miami Herald, Donalds’ campaign site has undergone a comprehensive overhaul, eliminating photos and mentions of Trump. A photograph featuring Donalds and his wife, Erika, with Trump, has been taken down, and Trump’s name now appears less prominently among other Republican figures such as Florida Senator Rick Scott and Texas Senator Ted Cruz.
In total, eight references to Trump have been deleted from the campaign site, as reported by visual data firm Visualping. Notably, the website’s “Fight Illegal Immigration” section now appears under a broader “Law & Order” topic as “stop taxpayer handouts to illegal immigration.”
Gates McGavick, a spokesperson for Donalds’ campaign, commented on the website changes in a statement to the Miami Herald. “Our campaign website reflects Byron’s focus on the issues that matter most to Floridians — affordability, insurance costs, and government transparency,” he stated. McGavick also affirmed Donalds’ pride in having Trump’s endorsement while critiquing Democratic opponent David Jolly for lacking substantial policy proposals.
With five weeks remaining until the midterm elections in November, Donalds is in a tight race against Democrat David Jolly. Current polling suggests Donalds holds a slight advantage, although Trump’s declining popularity, linked to factors such as the recent Iranian conflict and rising living costs, could impact Republican prospects.
After securing victory over primary challenger James Fishback, Donalds notably omitted any mention of Trump during his victory speech, choosing instead to praise other Republican leaders like South Carolina Senator Tim Scott.
