The Majestic Return: California Condors Soar Back into the Wild
In an encouraging step for wildlife conservation, the largest flying bird in North America, the California condor, is set to make a triumphant return to its natural habitat. This month, four of these magnificent birds will be released near the Arizona-Utah border, marking a significant event in their conservation journey.
These condors, nurtured through a captive breeding program aimed at boosting genetic diversity and population numbers, will find their new home at the Vermillion Cliffs National Monument. The release is being coordinated by the Arizona Game and Fish Department along with its partners. Currently, the Arizona-Utah flock numbers about roughly 116 condors as of 2022.
This year’s release will be celebrated with a public event, providing an opportunity for wildlife enthusiasts to gather at the condor viewing site. For those unable to attend in person, the event will also be available for viewing via a livestream on the Peregrine Fund’s YouTube channel.
