Man Arrested at Trump Golf Course with Illegal Weapons Stash Raises Security Concerns
In an incident that has brought security protocols into sharp focus, a California man was apprehended at President Donald Trump’s golf course in Rancho Palos Verdes, Los Angeles. The individual, posing as part of the security team for the President’s upcoming visit, was discovered with a collection of illegal weapons both in his vehicle and at his residence, authorities confirmed.
Jeanine John Taele, 38, was scheduled for a court appearance on federal weapons charges, but the hearing was unexpectedly cancelled. He remains in custody in a Los Angeles jail facing state charges, as confirmed by the U.S. attorney’s office.
The arrest took place on Sunday, just days before Trump’s visit for a fundraising dinner. According to a federal criminal complaint, Taele had been observed on the golf course the previous Friday, wearing an earpiece and monitoring federal agents as they conducted a security sweep.
Upon returning on Sunday, Taele approached federal agents claiming to be a State Department employee assigned to a security detail. He acknowledged having a loaded weapon in his vehicle, which led to his arrest after a search. Authorities also retrieved a 16-round magazine from his pocket.
During a search of Taele’s truck, law enforcement discovered a loaded 9mm pistol, binoculars, and a badge marked “security protection agent.” Further investigation at his Downey residence uncovered a modified AR-style rifle with a shortened barrel, along with other firearms, ammunition, body armor, and notebooks containing unspecified “concerning statements.”
FBI Los Angeles office assistant director Patrick Grandy expressed grave concerns about Taele’s actions: “Mr. Taele’s troubling behavior at the President’s public golf course merely days before the President was expected to arrive raised serious red flags for law enforcement. There is no room for error, particularly in light of previous attempts on President Trump’s life.”
In related remarks to Fox News, Trump commented, “only consequential presidents” are targeted, adding, “and I am definitely consequential,” which he said provided “a little solace.”
Taele’s military background includes service as a corporal in the U.S. Marines, with deployments to Iraq in 2008 and Afghanistan in 2010. He was recognized for his conduct during his service from 2008 to 2016. The Los Angeles County public defender’s office, representing Taele in the state case, did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
The incident echoes past security threats faced by Trump, including a jury’s recent guilty verdict against a man trying to assassinate Trump at his Florida country club and a narrowly avoided attempt at a Pennsylvania campaign rally.
