Celebrating Black Excellence at the 2025 Essence Women in Hollywood Awards

In a celebration of talent and resilience, the 18th annual Essence Black Women in Hollywood Awards highlighted the remarkable contributions of Black women in the entertainment industry. Held at the Fairmont Century Plaza Hotel in Los Angeles on February 27, the event was a poignant response to recent challenges against diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives.

This year’s ceremony recognized the exceptional work of several trailblazing women in film and television. Among the honorees were Academy Award nominee Cynthia Erivo, multifaceted performer Teyana Taylor, iconic actress Marla Gibbs, and accomplished writer-executive producer Raamla Mohamed.

Highlights from the Essence Black Women In Hollywood Awards

Celebrated for her acclaimed role in the movie Wicked alongside Ariana Grande, Cynthia Erivo was honored by fellow actress Keke Palmer. Teyana Taylor was acknowledged by Niecy Nash-Betts, while Issa Rae presented Raamla Mohamed with her award, recognizing their remarkable achievements.

The enduring career of Marla Gibbs, spanning over five decades, was celebrated by Tichina Arnold. Gibbs’ legacy in television was honored, emphasizing her groundbreaking contributions.

Another highlight was the presentation of the Essence Luminary Spotlight Award to Tyra Banks. The award recognized her significant impact on the fashion and entertainment industries, celebrating her resilience and longevity.

Joy-Ann Reid’s Impactful Presence

A standout moment of the evening was when anchor and political correspondent Joy Reid opened the ceremony with a powerful speech about the importance of diversity and inclusion. Coming just days after her show The Reid Out was canceled by MSNBC, Reid expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support she received.

“I have to say that I have never felt more enveloped and wrapped in the love of my people,” Reid stated. “It makes me feel so full. My heart is full. I just love, love, love my people. And so I just want to thank everyone. I want to thank Win With Black Women, who held a 25,000-person Zoom call last Sunday, and just everyone who has shown me so much support.”

Jokada Eaddy, founder of Women With Black Women, paid tribute to the victims of the California wildfires, shedding light on the affected minority communities in Altadena and Pasadena.

The event also brought together stars such as Taraji P. Henson, Zoe Kravitz, Tia Mowry, Anthony Anderson, Storm Reid, Meagan Good, Danielle Brooks, and Natasha Rothwell.

Fans eager to experience the event can watch the awards pre-show on the official Essence YouTube channel on Monday, March 3.
