Connecticut Sun’s Saniya Rivers Suffers Ankle Injury in Game Against Minnesota Lynx
In an unfortunate turn of events during the game against the Minnesota Lynx, Connecticut Sun’s guard Saniya Rivers sustained a sprained left ankle, necessitating her exit from the court in a wheelchair. The incident occurred on Wednesday night, capturing the attention of teammates and fans alike.
Rivers was in the midst of an aggressive play, driving to the basket when Lynx forward Nia Coffey blocked her shot. As Rivers landed awkwardly, her left foot rolled severely, resulting in her shoe coming off. Concern quickly spread as Sun athletic trainers and teammates gathered around her, offering immediate assistance. Rivers was subsequently wheeled off the court, her distress evident as a towel covered her head. The team later confirmed that she would not return to the game.
Saniya Rivers, drafted eighth overall in the 2025 draft from North Carolina State, has been a key player for the Sun this season, starting in 12 of the 21 games. Her absence marked a significant setback for the team.
The Connecticut Sun were already facing challenges, playing without star center Brittney Griner, who is dealing with a strained left quadriceps, and forward Aneesah Morrow, who was unavailable due to personal reasons. As Rivers left the game, the Sun found themselves without three of their top five scorers.
Meanwhile, the Minnesota Lynx also faced a missing player with star rookie point guard Olivia Miles sitting out for the second game in a row because of a strained right calf.
