D.C. Guardsman Arrested for Drawing Gun Over Hairstyle Dispute

Incident Among National Guardsmen in D.C. Sparks Concerns Over Conduct

In the bustling streets of Washington, D.C., an unusual incident among National Guardsmen has raised questions about discipline and conduct within the ranks. The altercation, which involved a firearm, unfolded outside a fast-food restaurant, bringing attention to the state of affairs among those tasked with maintaining security in the nation’s capital.

A 21-year-old National Guardsman, Zion Mitchell, was detained after allegedly pointing a weapon at a fellow guardsman during a dispute over hairstyles. The incident took place on August 25 while Mitchell was off duty with six other guardsmen, parked outside a Popeyes on H Street in Northeast D.C.

According to court documents, the altercation began when Mitchell made a comment about “regulation hairstyles,” telling a female soldier that he would “slap the Jackson 5 out of you!” The female soldier reportedly responded with, “Shut the f*ck up!” leading Mitchell to unholster his gun and aim it at her.

CNN reports that while the woman did not witness the gun being drawn, she heard the “holster click,” and other witnesses in the van claimed they saw the weapon raised. She then exited the van to enter the Popeyes.

Initially, Mitchell described the exchange as “playful,” denying that he aimed the gun at the woman’s head. However, he later admitted to drawing his pistol, insisting it was pointed downward, not directly at her.

Witness accounts, as reported by Military Times, suggest that the weapon was indeed aimed at the woman over another soldier’s shoulder, and it was loaded with a round chambered. Some witnesses also noted an ongoing friction between Mitchell and the woman, with claims that he often “picks on people” and “threatens women,” according to WUSA9.

The National Guard’s presence in D.C. is part of a security initiative launched last year under the “Make DC Safe and Beautiful” campaign. While the city has seen a decline in violent crime, the deployment remains substantial, with ABC News reporting that 3,100 guardsmen are stationed in the area following a surge during America’s 250th anniversary.

As for Mitchell, he has yet to enter a plea in his preliminary hearing, with the next court date set for September 15.
