In a sequence of events that underscores the ongoing debate over capital punishment, Florida executed Harold Gene Lucas, a 74-year-old man, for crimes committed nearly five decades ago. Lucas, who was convicted of murdering a teenage girl after she spurned his romantic overtures and injuring two of her friends, was executed at Florida State Prison.
The execution took place at 6:18 p.m., as Lucas received a lethal injection composed of three drugs. This marked him as the 14th individual to be executed in Florida this year, with Governor Ron DeSantis having sanctioned two additional executions in a state that accounts for over half of the executions across the United States this year. Lucas, who declined to pursue any further appeals, had previously expressed to a judge, “I’ve been on death row for 50 years, and I have no desire to carry this any further.”

Records indicate that Lucas, 24 at the time of the crime, had known Jill Piper and her family for several years and had even been employed by them. In August 1976, Lucas was arrested for trespassing at Piper’s home in Bonita Springs. Tensions escalated when Lucas and Piper had confrontations on the same day, during which Lucas threatened her life. Piper, fearing for her safety, had her friends, Richard Byrd Jr. and Terri Rice, stay with her. Lucas later arrived with a rifle, fatally shooting Piper and wounding the others.

Convicted of first-degree murder and attempted murder for the attack, Lucas faced multiple rounds of sentencing. Initially sentenced to death in 1977, the Florida Supreme Court deemed the sentencing process flawed, necessitating several resentencings.
