Florida Executes Man for 2006 Murder Under Governor DeSantis’ Term

The state of Florida continues its assertive stance on capital punishment as it prepares to execute William Frances Silvia for the murder of his estranged wife and the attempted murder of his mother-in-law. This execution, set for Tuesday, marks yet another instance of Florida’s rigorous application of the death penalty under the governance of Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis.

Silvia, aged 61, will be the 13th individual executed in Florida this year. With two additional executions planned for September, Florida has already conducted over half of the country’s total executions in 2026, which currently stands at 22.

The execution is scheduled to occur at Florida State Prison near Starke, commencing at 6 p.m. local time. As of now, a last-minute appeal is still pending before the U.S. Supreme Court.

Judicial Proceedings and Sentencing

In a case that has seen multiple legal battles, Silvia was initially sentenced to death for first-degree murder and attempted first-degree murder, following a 2006 incident where he fatally shot Patricia Silvia and injured her mother, Betty Woodard. Court records reveal that Silvia bought a shotgun and visited Woodard’s home, where his wife resided after their separation. After an unsuccessful reconciliation attempt, he resorted to violence during a family gathering.

Silvia’s initial death sentence, handed down after his 2008 trial, was overturned on appeal regarding Florida’s death penalty procedures. However, a subsequent 2018 resentencing reinstated the death penalty. Silvia’s legal team, provided by the Capital Collateral Regional Counsel, argued inadequate representation due to the agency’s existing commitments to another death row inmate, but the Florida Supreme Court dismissed these claims.

Execution Trends in Florida

The pace of executions in Florida has been notable. In 2025, the state executed 19 individuals, the highest since the death penalty’s reinstatement in 1976. Notably, in July, Florida became the first state in nearly a decade to execute two prisoners on the same day, as reported by AP News.

Next month, the state plans to execute two more death row inmates. Harold Gene Lucas, 74, is scheduled for execution on September 1 for the murder of a 16-year-old and the attempted murder of her friends. On September 10, Daniel Owen Conahan Jr., 72, will face execution for a 1990s murder, with suspicions of involvement in similar crimes.

According to the Department of Corrections, Florida’s executions are performed using a three-drug protocol: a sedative, a paralytic, and a heart-stopping drug.
