Former Baja California Governor Arrested Over Fuel Smuggling Charges
The former governor of Baja California, Ernesto Ruffo, has been apprehended by Mexican federal authorities due to his alleged involvement in a significant fuel smuggling operation. The arrest comes after an extensive and technical investigation carried out by Mexico’s justice department.
According to Mexican authorities, the investigation uncovered that the smuggling operation involved the mislabeling of fuel imports from the United States. This tactic was reportedly employed to circumvent Mexico’s import taxes.
Mexican Attorney General Ernestina Godoy Ramos highlighted the detrimental impact of this operation on the nation’s economy, stating, “This criminal behavior directly affects the country’s economy, while at the same time generating income for criminal organizations.”
The Department of Justice in Mexico has disclosed that a company established by Ruffo played a crucial role in executing this large-scale fuel smuggling scheme.
