In a significant ruling from eastern China, former official Yang Youlin has been sentenced to death for corruption, marking one of the most substantial bribery cases in recent history. The decision comes as part of ongoing efforts to combat corruption within the country.
Massive Bribery Scandal Uncovered
The Changzhou Intermediate People’s Court revealed that Yang, once an economic development official in Nanjing, Jiangsu Province, had accepted illegal assets and properties exceeding 2.21 billion yuan ($325 million) over a span of 30 years, from 1993 to 2023. These bribes were given in return for favors related to project approvals, business operations, land allocations, and financial assistance.
Wider Anti-Corruption Campaign
Yang’s case is part of President Xi Jinping‘s comprehensive anti-corruption campaign, which has been ongoing for a decade. While many view this campaign as a necessary step to curb corruption, critics argue that it also serves as a tool to eliminate political adversaries.
Additional Charges and Legal Proceedings
Besides accepting bribes, Yang faced convictions for embezzlement, offering bribes, misusing public funds, abusing power, and money laundering. He delivered a final statement in court expressing guilt and remorse. Court-released photos depict Yang, gray-haired, in a dark jacket, flanked by police officers.
Public and Legal Repercussions
The court held public hearings in March and April, attended by over 30 individuals. The verdict included confiscation of Yang’s personal property and efforts to reclaim the bribes. Yang’s case is the latest in a series of executions related to corruption. In 2021, Lai Xiaomin faced execution for similar crimes, and in 2024, Li Jianping was executed for embezzlement and bribery.
