Hamburg Court Imposes Prison Sentences on Right-Wing Extremists
A Hamburg court has delivered a verdict against members of the extremist group known as “Last Defense Wave”, sentencing them for serious crimes including attempted murder and arson. This verdict is part of Germany’s ongoing efforts to combat right-wing extremism.
The Hanseatic Higher Regional Court found the defendants guilty of being part of or supporting a terrorist organization. Their activities included planning and executing arson and bomb attacks on shelters for asylum seekers as well as left-wing establishments. They were also accused of engaging in vigilantism against individuals they suspected of being pedophiles.
The group, comprising young men aged between 14 and 21 at the time of their offenses, faced sentencing under Germany’s juvenile criminal law. Sentences ranged from one and a half to five years in prison. The youngest participant received a suspended sentence of one and a half years, as reported by the German news agency dpa. The defendants have the option to appeal the sentences.
Among their crimes, the group was responsible for a fire that destroyed a cultural center in Altdöbern, Brandenburg, in October 2024. Fortunately, no injuries occurred due to the residents’ absence at the time of the attack.
In another incident in January 2024, two members attempted to set an asylum seeker shelter ablaze in Schmölln, Thuringia, using pyrotechnics. The attack also involved graffitiing swastikas and xenophobic slogans like “foreigners out” on the building’s exterior.
Additionally, plans for an arson attack on an asylum facility in Senftenberg, Brandenburg, were thwarted thanks to information provided by a reporting team, according to the indictment.
Further investigations in June led to the detention of two additional teenagers in Thuringia, accused of being affiliated with the “Last Defense Wave” group, as per dpa reports.
