Maricopa County’s Push to Cease Federal Oversight of Sheriff’s Office
As Maricopa County endeavors to close a chapter involving federal oversight, a pivotal hearing has been slated for June 26. This session will evaluate the county’s plea to conclude the monitoring of its Sheriff’s Office, a process initiated due to past racial profiling allegations against former Sheriff Joe Arpaio.
The oversight, managed by a court-appointed monitor, has been a significant step in enforcing reforms designed to address the lawsuit’s concerns. However, concerns over the financial burden on taxpayers have led members of the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors to advocate for the cessation of this federal intervention.
In a formal motion last December, the county requested Judge Murray Snow to terminate the oversight. Judge Snow’s upcoming hearing will focus on this request, marking a critical juncture in the county’s efforts to demonstrate compliance with necessary reforms.
Judge Snow has indicated that the termination of oversight is contingent upon the Sheriff’s Office maintaining compliance with the established reforms for a minimum of three years.
