Liberty Justice Center Challenges New Tariffs in Court
In a bold move against recent tariff implementations, the Liberty Justice Center has initiated legal proceedings in the U.S. Court of International Trade in New York. The libertarian organization, known for its successful litigation against previous tariffs introduced by former President Trump, is now contesting the latest round of import taxes.
On Friday, the Trump administration, citing the Trade Act of 1974, imposed tariffs ranging from 10% to 12.5% on products from 16 countries. The administration claims these measures target nations that have not adequately addressed the issue of goods manufactured using forced labor.
However, the Liberty Justice Center argues that these tariffs serve as a means for Trump to maintain economic barriers following the Supreme Court’s decision to nullify substantial global taxes he had set in place the previous year. The recent tariffs became effective at 12:01 a.m. Friday, coinciding with the expiration of temporary tariffs that had been implemented after the Supreme Court ruling.
“The administration allowed one global tariff to expire and immediately replaced it with another under a different statute,” stated Sara Albrecht, chair of the Liberty Justice Center. “Changing the statute doesn’t change the law. Every tariff authority has limits, and every administration must respect them.”
The Liberty Justice Center has a history of representing businesses that successfully contested the global tariffs proposed by Trump in 2025, reinforcing their stance on the limitations of tariff authority.
