Luigi Mangione’s Guilty Plea in High-Profile CEO Shooting
Luigi Mangione, on Friday, admitted to federal charges of stalking related to the December 2024 killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. This development occurred in a Manhattan courtroom, with Thompson’s family observing the proceedings.
NBC News reports that Mangione openly declared in his plea, “I emailed UnitedHealthcare with the intent to shoot Brian Thompson.” He detailed the events of Dec. 4, 2024, explaining he shot Thompson in the back in Manhattan, fully aware of the illegal nature of his actions.
According to Mangione, his grievances with the American healthcare system, particularly due to a back injury, motivated his actions. Prosecutors highlighted that Mangione had no personal ties to UnitedHealthcare. Facing a potential life sentence, Mangione’s sentencing is set for December.
Thompson’s family, in a statement, expressed gratitude towards the federal justice system but emphasized the importance of the upcoming sentencing reflecting the crime’s gravity: “While nothing will ease the pain of losing him, we are grateful that the federal justice system has held the person responsible for this heinous act accountable.”
Previously, Mangione had entered a not guilty plea for both state and federal charges, as noted by The Washington Post. His recent federal plea appears to aim at invoking double jeopardy protections against state charges.

Mangione’s defense is expected to argue that the cases cover the same alleged conduct and that proceeding with a state court trial would amount to a legal violation.
“Since December 2024, the Manhattan D.A.’s Office has been tirelessly preparing to pursue a trial conviction in New York State Supreme Court for the alleged cold-blooded murder of Brian Thompson,” a spokesperson for the Manhattan District Attorney’s office said following the federal hearing. “While federal sentencing is pending, we are prepared to litigate the defense motions. The Manhattan D.A.’s Office remains committed to seeking justice for Mr. Thompson and his family.”
Following the guilty plea, Mangione’s lawyer Karen Friedman Agnifilo said, “We just filed our motion in state court explaining why the state charges must be dismissed under New York’s double jeopardy protections.”
In the aftermath of Thompson’s death, Mangione gained unexpected support as many criticized the healthcare system’s inefficiencies, with some even wearing “Free Luigi” shirts. Following these reactions, U.S. Attorney Jamie McDonald condemned those celebrating Mangione’s actions: “Any person who celebrates, encourages, or excuses actions like these is fundamentally wrong,” McDonald stated. “Violence is not a legitimate instrument to promote any political or social message.”
