Man Accused of Shooting National Guard Troops Hospitalized After Hunger Strike

In a dramatic twist in a high-profile case involving a deadly shooting near the White House, the accused, Rahmanullah Lakanwal, has been hospitalized. The Afghan national, who is facing serious charges including first-degree murder, has reportedly been refusing food during his detention, leading authorities to fear for his life.

Health Crisis in Custody

According to court documents, the U.S. Marshals Service had previously warned that Lakanwal might suffer severe health issues, including potentially fatal outcomes, due to his prolonged refusal to eat. Just recently, he was rushed to a hospital for life-saving medical care.

The Justice Department has indicated that legal precedents allow for the involuntary feeding of prisoners on hunger strike to preserve their lives, though the specific reasons for Lakanwal’s refusal remain undisclosed.

Emergency Court Hearing

U.S. District Judge Amit Mehta convened a special hearing to address Lakanwal’s medical situation while he remains in federal custody. At the conclusion of the session, Judge Mehta instructed the prosecution to draft an order granting them access to the defendant’s recent health records.

Both Lakanwal’s defense attorney, Shelli Peterson, and a representative from the U.S. Attorney’s office, led by Jeanine Pirro, opted not to comment after the hearing.

Background of the Case

Lakanwal stands accused of ambushing two National Guard members, resulting in the death of Spc. Sarah Beckstrom and critical injuries to Staff Sgt. Andrew Wolfe. The tragic incident occurred in November 2025, amidst a heightened federal law enforcement presence in Washington, D.C., as directed by then-President Donald Trump.

Reports state that Lakanwal drove from Bellingham, Washington, to the capital with a stolen firearm. The attack unfolded near a subway station, mere blocks from the White House, where he allegedly fired shots while shouting, “Allahu Akbar!” This alarming event was witnessed by another Guard member, who saw Beckstrom and Wolfe collapse.

Following the shooting, Lakanwal was injured and made his initial court appearance via video link from a hospital bed. His trial date has yet to be determined.
