Michelle Obama Reflects on Early Days with Barack: Financial Stability Wasn’t a Priority

On a recent episode of her podcast “IMO,” Michelle Obama shared insights into her relationship with Barack Obama, focusing on their financial journey together. In a conversation with her brother, Craig Robinson, Michelle revealed that financial stability was not a deciding factor when she chose to marry Barack.
Robinson questioned whether Michelle would be drawn to someone lacking financial stability. Michelle candidly replied, “Uh, I married one.” She recounted how she left her corporate job upon meeting Barack, relying on his promise of support. “The risks you think you’re taking, they aren’t that crazy, and I’m here to help you,” Barack assured her, which she valued more than financial security. “I would rather have somebody who is ready to do some hard things with me,” she added.
The discussion touched on the tendency of some women today to prioritize a partner’s financial security, a notion Michelle challenged by emphasizing the importance of looking beyond superficial attributes. Michelle and Barack first met at a law firm in 1989, got engaged in 1991, and tied the knot in 1992. Their lives took a significant turn when Barack became an Illinois state senator in 2004, eventually leading to his presidency in 2008.
Despite their eventual success, Michelle has been transparent about the hurdles they faced in their marriage. She has previously mentioned that raising their daughters, Malia and Sasha, often strained their relationship, admitting there were times she “couldn’t stand” Barack. However, she highlighted that marriage requires resilience, stating, “I would take 10 bad years over 30.”
