In the wake of a tragic incident at a Walmart in Senatobia, Mississippi, where a police officer fatally shot a 1-year-old Black child named Kohen Kartier Wiley, the community has erupted in protest. This event has drawn significant attention to the actions of local law enforcement and has prompted calls for transparency and justice.

The incident occurred on June 14 and has since sparked widespread demonstrations across the city. According to a report by ABC 24, protesters gathered outside the Senatobia City Hall and later moved to the Walmart location where the shooting took place. The situation escalated as officers used tear gas to disperse the crowd.

Authorities from the Mississippi Department of Public Safety reported that officers were responding to a shoplifting call when they encountered two adults and an infant. The department claimed a woman began driving toward the officers, which resulted in an officer shooting through the vehicle’s windshield, injuring the driver and killing the child.

However, Kohen’s family disputes these claims, stating that no shoplifting occurred. They assert that Kohen’s mother and aunt were leaving the store with him when the shooting happened. Tragically, Kohen was pronounced dead at the scene.

The family is demanding the release of the bodycam and surveillance footage from the incident. As reported by the Associated Press, their attorney Van Turner emphasized, “We want a transparent investigation. We want a thorough investigation, and we want to make sure there is no chance of any type of cover-up.”

The officer involved has been placed on administrative leave. The Senatobia Police Department stated in a Facebook post that they would share verified information as the investigation progresses.
