The majestic Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, a historical landmark in Washington, D.C., has recently become the center of attention due to unexpected damages. Recent reports have revealed that a liner at the bottom of the pool was cut, leading to significant concerns about vandalism and the pool’s ongoing renovation efforts.
Frank Lands, the National Park Service’s deputy director of operations, disclosed that the U.S. Park Police were alerted on June 9 after the park service filed a complaint. This statement was part of a court document associated with a lawsuit against the Trump administration’s work on the pool. Lands did not specify when the damage occurred or if vandalism was suspected.
Details of the Incident
According to the police report, the damage involved a sharp object cutting through the caulk over the foam sealant, along with the delamination of surface material. Additionally, around 70 fence post tops were reportedly thrown into the pool.

Response from the Interior Department
The Interior Department initially considered the damage an isolated incident. A spokesperson explained that the delay in public notification was due to the ongoing investigation. However, subsequent incidents, including videos of individuals damaging the pool’s coating, indicated a troubling trend.
President Donald Trump and officials have accused unidentified vandals of causing the damage, including peeling paint and a significant liner gash. Trump mentioned this week that six arrests have been made, although details were scarce. The Interior Department later confirmed seven arrests, seven federal citations, and 18 police reports.
The renovations, part of a $16 million project, aimed to beautify the Reflecting Pool for the upcoming 250th anniversary of the United States. Despite these efforts, the pool faced issues with algae and peeling coatings. Innovative devices called nanobubblers were used to address the algae problem.
Timeline and Renovation Issues
Videos reviewed by the Associated Press showed that the Reflecting Pool was refilled between June 4 and June 9. The damage reported on June 9 could have occurred before the pool was fully refilled. The Park Police released surveillance footage seeking public assistance in identifying a person involved in the investigation.
Following Independence Day celebrations, repairs are planned, including addressing the liner damage. The Cultural Landscape Foundation has filed a lawsuit against the renovations, arguing for expert consultations to guide the project’s future.
Calls for Investigation
Democratic lawmakers have called for investigations into the renovation contracts, alleging connections between vendors and President Trump. Green Water Solutions received $1.7 million for a water-purification system, and Atlantic Industrial Coatings was awarded $14.7 million for repainting and waterproofing.
Senator Jeff Merkley criticized the renovations as a misuse of taxpayer funds, citing issues like peeling coatings and algae blooms. He and other Democrats are demanding accountability and transparency in addressing these problems.
New Mexico Senator Martin Heinrich, along with other senators, emphasized the need for a comprehensive explanation of the renovation failures and accountability for resolving them.
