A shocking case has emerged from Jackson, Mississippi, where two arrests have been made following the discovery of Tasia Fortune, a 29-year-old mother of four, found hanging from a tree. The investigation has taken a serious turn as authorities continue to piece together the events leading to her tragic death.

The case saw its first significant development when police detained 51-year-old Jarques “Jock” Ratliff. According to a report by NewsOne, Ratliff has been linked to Fortune’s death, which was declared a homicide two weeks prior to his arrest. Although he pleaded not guilty, he remains in custody, denied bail, as his connection to Fortune is scrutinized further.

Another arrest was announced by Jackson Police Chief RaShall Brackney during a city council meeting. Earnest Lloyd Jr., a 25-year-old man, has been charged with murder relating to Fortune’s death. In addition, the police have issued an arrest warrant for a third suspect and have enlisted the U.S. Marshals to assist in the search, with WLBT reporting more warrants expected.

Initially, investigators had identified an unnamed former boyfriend as a person of interest. WLBT reports he was apprehended for unrelated charges but has not been charged with Fortune’s death. He resides near the scene where Fortune was discovered, and while he denied involvement, police noted his prior relationship with Fortune—something he disputes.

Despite the arrests, there’s still ambiguity surrounding Fortune’s exact cause of death. “Tasia Fortune was found in a hanging position, and I need to stay with that language to not jeopardize this case,” said Chief Brackney, as quoted by CNN.

The case has gained national attention, partly due to Mississippi’s fraught history with racially charged violence. The NAACP notes Mississippi’s record of 581 lynchings between 1882 and 1968, and distrust lingers regarding police investigations into such deaths involving Black individuals.

In the past year alone, two other individuals were found hanging in Mississippi, with both deaths being ruled suicides. As the investigation unfolds, the police promise further actions to ensure justice for Tasia Fortune and her family.
