Senator Mark Kelly and Fellow Democrats Challenge DHS Actions on Voter Fraud Claims
Amid growing concerns over election integrity, Senator Mark Kelly of Arizona, alongside over twenty other Democrats, has taken a firm stance against the Trump administration’s alleged interference in the upcoming 2026 midterms. They have signed a letter raising alarms about actions that could erode public confidence in the electoral process.
The letter directly addresses Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin, criticizing him for his reluctance to publicly ensure that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Border Patrol personnel will not be deployed to voting sites, a move that would contravene federal law. The Democrats demand Mullin justify his earlier assertion that 250,000 non-citizens were unlawfully registered to vote in four states, an assertion yet to be substantiated with evidence.
These actions follow allegations from a Department of Homeland Security (DHS) whistleblower. The whistleblower claims that a recent voter fraud investigation led to potentially illegal activities, such as using personal information to verify immigration statuses and impersonating voters on registration websites.
The senators urge Secretary Mullin to halt this controversial initiative and to substantiate claims of voter fraud. They argue that without evidence, “unsubstantiated allegations of noncitizen voter fraud” and other actions by the DHS risk disenfranchising voters and undermining the electoral process.
Responding to these concerns, a DHS spokesperson refuted claims that the department seeks to impose greater federal control over elections, calling such notions “totally false.” The spokesperson clarified that ICE targets enforcement based on intelligence and that operations at polling sites would only occur if there were significant public safety threats.
Despite these assurances, the DHS has yet to provide any evidence supporting the claim of 250,000 non-U.S. citizens registered to vote, leaving questions unanswered about the basis of these allegations.
