Lawmakers Raise Concerns Over Online Betting’s Impact on Tribal Rights
A recent surge in online prediction markets and casino games has prompted a group of 12 U.S. lawmakers to voice concerns about potential threats to tribal sovereignty. Among them is Arizona’s senior senator, Democratic Sen. Mark Kelly, who has joined calls for stricter regulation of platforms like Kalshi and Robinhood.
In a letter addressed to Senate committee chairs, Kelly and his colleagues emphasize the need for legislation to prohibit these platforms in regions where tribes have exclusive gaming rights. The letter argues that certain prediction markets exploit commodity and derivatives regulations to facilitate sports and event betting, often in contradiction to state laws.
The Arizona Attorney General has previously accused Kalshi of engaging in illegal betting activities. However, judicial decisions have determined that the platform falls under the jurisdiction of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission.
