South African Court Temporarily Halts Ramaphosa’s Impeachment
A recent court decision in South Africa has temporarily paused the impeachment process against President Cyril Ramaphosa, who has been embroiled in a controversy involving the theft of over $580,000 from his farm in 2020. This judicial ruling, while halting the proceedings, still allows the impeachment committee to continue its preparatory work.
The impeachment process initiated in June was a result of a parliamentary report that raised questions about the president’s handling of the incident. The report scrutinizes why such a substantial amount of cash was concealed in a sofa and probes the origins of the money, including whether the foreign currency was legally documented and why Ramaphosa delayed reporting the theft to law enforcement.
In response to the report, President Ramaphosa has challenged its findings in court and requested a suspension of the impeachment until a review of the report is completed. Following the court’s decision, Ramaphosa expressed approval, with his office stating he would “cooperate with and abide by processes of accountability.” Additionally, the office emphasized the president’s commitment to “judicial independence and separation of powers enshrined in our Constitution.”
Known as the “Phala-Phala scandal,” this controversy has been a significant issue for Ramaphosa since he assumed office in 2018. Earlier this year, the country’s Constitutional Court validated the parliamentary report, allowing the impeachment proceedings to continue after the ANC successfully blocked it in a parliamentary vote.
The impeachment committee, which includes members from all political parties within the South African Parliament, is now reviewing the judgment. Many parties indicated they would assess the ruling and decide on potential appeals.
