Amidst growing tensions over racial and political divides, public figures are increasingly called upon to address systemic issues head-on. In Tennessee, one politician has emerged as a vocal critic of the prevailing political climate.

Justin Pearson, a Democratic representative from Memphis, has become a prominent figure after being expelled from the Tennessee House for leading a protest against gun violence. This expulsion, which also involved another Black Democrat, Justin Jones, was a response to their stance following a tragic school shooting in Nashville. Pearson and Jones were reportedly targeted due to their visible protest actions on the House floor. More on this can be read here.

Recently, Pearson was involved in a confrontation with Tennessee Highway Patrol troopers during a protest against changes in voting rights. The protest erupted as Tennessee Republicans acted on a Supreme Court decision that weakened the Voting Rights Act. This decision has been used to justify a new voting map that effectively reduces Black voting influence by eliminating the state’s only majority Black district. Details of the protest can be found here.

According to Action News 5, a heated exchange was captured on camera between Pearson and law enforcement as his brother was detained. The confrontation occurred shortly after the new congressional map was approved, dividing Memphis into three districts. During the altercation, Pearson was heard vocally challenging the officers.

“Get the f*** back!” Justin is heard shouting at officers as he and his brother, KeShaun Pearson, were being escorted out of the House chambers.

The Memphis lawmaker could be heard raising his voice at one particular trooper as the crowd moved outside. “Boy! The f*** is wrong with you?! The f*** is wrong with you?! Stupid m***********…”

Pearson hugged KeShaun and told him he was proud of him before troopers took him away.

In a press statement following the incident, Pearson condemned the new district maps as racially motivated. “These maps are racist tools of white supremacy at the behest of the most powerful white supremacist, Donald J. Trump,” he stated.

The actions and statements of Pearson highlight the ongoing struggle against systemic racism and the need for bold leadership in addressing these issues.
