In the aftermath of a weekend shooting at Seattle’s popular Bite of Seattle festival, authorities have now identified at least three individuals involved in the incident near the iconic Space Needle. Among the suspects is a deceased individual, while a 15-year-old has been detained.
An official document from juvenile court in Seattle reveals that the 15-year-old, who waived his initial court appearance on Monday, and an acquaintance who died in the shootout, were involved alongside “at least one other unknown suspect.” The document noted, “Based on the evidence at the scene, investigators believe” the 15-year-old “and one of the deceased engaged in a gunfight with at least one other unknown suspect.”
The teenager is being held in juvenile detention as investigations into firearms violations and first-degree assault continue. Authorities anticipate receiving the case from Seattle police by Wednesday for further charges.
The shooting took place at approximately 6 p.m. on Sunday, during the closing hours of the Bite of Seattle. The annual event is a significant draw, featuring hundreds of food and retail vendors at Seattle Center. The attack resulted in three fatalities and at least four injuries, with attendees fleeing the scene in panic.
Confusion over the number of suspects
Conflicting statements from city officials initially created confusion over the number of suspects. Despite Sunday’s arrest of one suspect, police withheld this information for five hours. Mayor Katie Wilson initially claimed two suspects were in custody, a statement she later corrected. At a Monday news conference, Police Chief Shon Barnes, who was absent on Sunday, stated uncertainty over whether the second shooter was among the deceased.
The officials stressed their efforts to provide precise information amid the chaotic situation. The deceased were reported as two men, aged 19 and 44, and a 56-year-old woman.
Among the injured was a 2-year-old boy, who is reportedly in satisfactory condition. Three others, two men aged 23 and 27 and a woman aged 39, were treated and released from the hospital. According to court documents, one victim was hit while walking a bicycle, and the toddler was accompanied by his mother.
Food festival aftermath and attendee experiences
As the investigation unfolded, vendors were granted access on Monday to retrieve their belongings from the festival site. Unattended food and merchandise were left behind as people evacuated the area during the shooting. Near the shooting site, a candlelight vigil was organized to honor the victims.
Security was heightened at the event, with numerous officers present. Some officers witnessed one suspect firing, prompting a swift response to secure the area and evacuate attendees. Police initially believed another shooter had fled to a nearby IMAX theater.
Festival participant Adam Lombardo recounted the scene as chaotic, describing a “stampede” as people scrambled for safety. He returned to the site to gather his equipment, noting the somber reality of the violence: “It’s really sad because you think that three innocent people aren’t getting up with their families,” he said.
Other attendees shared similar stories of panic. Faith Adia Hunter was about to eat with friends when the chaos erupted, causing them to seek refuge in the Seattle Children’s Museum. Estan Wakonabo, another festival-goer, described the ensuing panic as people pushed, fell, and tried to protect their loved ones.
The Bite of Seattle, which began in 1982, typically attracts around 350,000 visitors annually, according to its organizers.
